Where do I get started on planning to drive across the US?

Me and my boyfriend are from the UK and are thinking about flying to florida and driving the southern route across the US through texas and to california. I am so confused as to where to start!! whats the best option for car hire? is it safe? how much are motels or should I bring a tent? how much would it cost considering that we intend to visit A lot of tourist attractions!
